Inside the Sound: Martins Hi-Fi's Exclusive Visit to the Paradigm and Anthem Factory in Canada
By Marcus Harbord, Martins Hi-Fi
In a world where so much audio manufacturing has been outsourced overseas, our visit to the Paradigm and Anthem facility in Mississauga, just outside Toronto, felt genuinely refreshing. These are two brands that still make things themselves, in a facility of their own, with people who have spent entire careers doing it.
We were among seven UK dealers invited for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour — an opportunity made possible by Corey and Kapes at Pulse Cinemas, the UK distributor, whose organisation of the trip was first-rate. Our thanks to everyone involved.
Crafted in Canada
The scale of the in-house manufacturing was immediately striking. The Mississauga facility covers 225,000 square feet, and almost every stage of production happens within it: R&D, speaker cabinet building, injection-moulded drive units, Anthem amplifier production, and final assembly — all under one roof.
Watching raw materials become finished loudspeakers and amplifiers brings into sharp focus the blend of advanced manufacturing and traditional craftsmanship that underpins these brands. What stays with you is how much of the process is still carried out by hand, by specialists who know these products in a way that only years of close work can produce.
One moment that stood out: meeting Mary, who has wound voice coils at the factory for over 35 years. Decades of precision work, carried out with an expertise that no machine replicates. The pride and care visible throughout the factory floor was impossible to miss — it informed everything we saw.
Engineering Without Compromise
The engineering credentials were equally impressive. Paradigm and Anthem house North America's largest privately owned anechoic chamber: a room within a room designed for ultra-precise acoustic measurement. Standing inside it is a peculiar experience — the silence has a physical quality that makes ordinary rooms seem noisy by comparison.
Equally striking was their double-blind listening programme. Speakers are positioned behind an acoustically transparent screen, removing all visual bias from the evaluation. The listener hears the product and nothing else. The quality standard is unambiguous: if it does not stand up to blind scrutiny, it is not good enough. A powerful reminder that despite all of the technology involved in creating these products, human listening always has the final word.
Beyond the Factory
The hospitality extended well beyond the facility itself. Special thanks are due to owner John Bagby and to John Soden, vice president and our principal host throughout the trip, for their generosity and for ensuring we understood not just the products but the thinking behind them.
Canada itself was good company: Niagara Falls, vineyards, a whiskey distillery, and consistently excellent food. The camaraderie among the UK dealers and the wider Paradigm and Anthem team made the trip something more than a factory visit — it was a genuinely memorable experience.
What the Visit Changes
Touring a manufacturing facility changes the way you view the products. Seeing the engineering, the craftsmanship, and the attention to detail behind every speaker and amplifier gives a whole new appreciation for what Paradigm and Anthem actually make. These are not abstract objects — they are the result of decades of accumulated knowledge, built by people who care about getting it right.
We return from Canada proud to represent both brands in Norwich, and more committed than ever to sharing that level of performance with our customers.
