A Visit to Vitus: Inside the Aalborg Factory

By Chris Brown, Martins Hi-Fi

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Vitus Audio at their factory in Aalborg, Denmark — accompanied by Steve and Glen from AIRT, the UK distributor, and hosted by Hans-Ole Vitus and his family. It is the sort of visit that reminds you why certain brands command the respect they do.

The Demonstration Room

We arrived to find the demonstration room already prepared — two complete systems, set up and ready to listen.

The first was built around a pair of YG Acoustics XX 3 Reference loudspeakers driven by the SM-025 Mono Amplifiers. The second paired Gobel Divin Noblesse speakers with the MP-S201 Stereo Power Amplifier. Either system would be considered a serious reference in its own right.

Sources covered the full range of what serious audio can offer: streaming through Roon, a vinyl front end, and a reel-to-reel tape machine. The breadth of sources was telling: with so much on offer, what became apparent was how consistently the amplification performed regardless of what was feeding it — stepping aside and letting the source speak.

The Factory Tour

After the initial listening session, Hans took us through the factory itself — beginning with a brief but absorbing history of the company and a look at the awards and recognition the products have accumulated over thirty years of manufacture.

The production process begins with PCB population, carried out across a series of dedicated stations and machines. What follows is where the character of the brand becomes tangible: every unit is hand-assembled by masters of their craft. The attention to detail is not a marketing claim here — it is plainly visible in the way the work is done and in the standard of the finished product.

Final sign-off falls to Britta Vitus, who tests every unit before it leaves the factory. It is a genuinely family operation, and the care with which each product is approved is consistent with everything else about how Vitus approaches the work.

The R&D Department

Hans then showed us the R&D space — the room where he comes to think and to listen. An extraordinary collection of audio equipment on display, accumulated over decades of development and evaluation. It is both a working laboratory and a testament to the seriousness with which the design process is taken.

Two Hours of Listening

The visit closed with an extended session back in the demonstration room — two hours, no rush, with no shortage of material to listen to. It is the kind of time with a manufacturer that dealers rarely get, and it left a clear impression.

We left Aalborg considerably better informed about the products and considerably more convinced about the investment they represent.
