Home Cinema

A properly designed home cinema changes the way you watch films, sport, and television. Permanently.

Martins Hi-Fi have been designing and installing home cinema systems across Norfolk, Suffolk, and East Anglia since 1968. We are CEDIA-accredited, and every project we take on is designed from scratch, built to last, and backed by our team in Norwich long after installation day.

Whether you're planning a dedicated cinema room, transforming your lounge into a home cinema room, or upgrading what you already have, we'll help you make the right decisions from the start — not the expensive ones you'll wish you'd made differently.

Choosing the Right Space

Before anyone talks to you about equipment, they should be talking to you about your room. The space shapes everything — the screen size, the speaker configuration, the acoustic treatment, the seating. Get the room wrong and no amount of expensive hardware will fix it.

A dedicated home cinema room — a spare room, a basement, a loft conversion — gives you complete control over the environment. Light, acoustics, and layout can all be optimised specifically for film, and the results are extraordinary. These projects are increasingly popular across Norfolk and Suffolk, both in new builds and in period properties where you'd least expect to find them.

A home cinema room built within an existing living space — your lounge or family room — is a different discipline, but equally rewarding when done well. The technology disappears into the room, and you're left with a space that works beautifully every day and transforms completely for film night.

Picture: Projection & Display

A 4K laser projector paired with a high-quality acoustically transparent screen is still the finest way to bring a true cinematic experience into your home. Laser projectors have transformed what's possible — the brightness, colour accuracy, and longevity are in a different league from the lamp-based projectors most people remember.

For rooms where projection isn't practical, today's large-format OLED and QLED displays are genuinely extraordinary — and many installations combine both. A premium display for everyday viewing, a retractable screen for film night. You get the best of everything without compromising either.

Short-throw and ultra-short-throw laser projectors are worth knowing about too — they sit close to the screen, remove the need for ceiling mounting, and can make projection possible in rooms where it previously wasn't.

Kaleidescape: For Those Who Want the Best

If picture and sound quality matter to you — really matter — Kaleidescape is worth knowing about. Kaleidescape servers store and play back films in full lossless 4K with uncompressed Dolby Atmos audio. It is the only home cinema content system that genuinely rivals a cinema print in quality, and the difference over streaming is audible and visible.

The interface is elegant, fast, and built entirely around the home cinema experience. For the right project, it's the single most significant upgrade you can make. We are Kaleidescape dealers and have installed their systems in homes across Norfolk and Suffolk.

Sound: Surround Sound & Dolby Atmos

Audio is half the experience — arguably more. A home cinema in Norfolk or Suffolk designed around properly calibrated Dolby Atmos surround sound places you inside the film rather than in front of it. Sound moves around and above you with real precision, and once you've heard it done properly, going back feels like watching through a window.

We specify AV amplifiers from Anthem, Arcam, and Trinnov — companies that take audio performance as seriously as we do — paired with speaker systems from Bowers & Wilkins, KEF, and Triad. Speakers can be in-ceiling, in-wall, free-standing, or any combination, positioned and calibrated to the specific dimensions of your room. We've been doing this since 1968. It shows.

Room Acoustics

The room is an instrument. An untreated room introduces reflections, resonances, and flutter echo that no amount of expensive hardware will compensate for — the sound will always be fighting the space it's in.

Our acoustic design process starts with the room itself — its dimensions, construction, surfaces, and how you want it to feel — and works toward a result that controls the sound environment without making the space feel like a recording studio. Acoustic treatment can be as subtle or as thorough as the project demands, and it's always designed to sit comfortably within the interior of the room, not fight against it.

Lighting & Automation

Lighting does more to your picture than most people realise. The wrong ambient light washes out the image and flattens the experience; properly controlled lighting makes a good picture extraordinary and a great picture genuinely cinematic.

Every home cinema installation we design in East Anglia integrates smart lighting — motorised blinds, scene-based lighting control, full automation that responds to what you're doing. One command dims the lights, closes the blinds, and starts the film. Voice control, dedicated remotes, and smartphone interfaces are all available depending on how you want to live with it.

Automation can extend as far as you'd like — heating, climate control, and full smart home integration are all possible within the same project.

Project Management

A home cinema installation involves more trades than most people anticipate — AV, electrical, carpentry, acoustic treatment, interior design, and often structural work. Managing those as separate contractors is stressful, expensive, and a reliable way for things to go wrong.

Our design and installation service handles the process end-to-end. We work directly with your builder, architect, or site manager, coordinate everything, make sure equipment arrives when it's needed, and take responsibility for the finished result. When we hand the system over, we walk through every feature with you — how it works, how to get the best from it, and who to call. All call-outs in the first year are included.

Come and Hear It For Yourself

There's only one way to really understand what a home cinema sounds and looks like. The Snug is our purpose-built demonstration room at our Norwich showroom — a fully calibrated Dolby Atmos cinema available for private visits by appointment.

If you're considering a home cinema installation in Norfolk, Suffolk, or anywhere across East Anglia, this is the best place to start.

Acoustic Treatment

The design and approach need to be taken into consideration. Acoustic design is based on the client’s aspirations, with the aim to make space have its own acoustic identity and create a truly bespoke system to that room, restoring the natural sound balance allowing you to hear what was intended by the artist or director.
