MUSICAL NOTES from Chord Technical Director, Nigel Finn
"Every now and then you have one of those moments. We’d reached the prototype stage with the Sarum Digital and no matter what the design and no matter how confident you are about the configuration, at some stage a cable needs plugging in and listening to. In the case of the Sarum Digital we were going through a John Martin phase in the Dem Room and the first track we listened to was Solid Air. This is a remarkable tune that really highlights John Martin’s unique rhythmic guitar style and also Danny Thompson’s phenomenal double bass playing. This is a track we know very well and yet with the Sarum Digital in place, suddenly the intense understanding that Martin and Thompson had of each other’s playing became not just obvious but brightly lit. The way the two musicians play together is almost magical and with the Sarum Digital in place, this magical combination of bass and guitar wasn’t just rhythmically clear, the harmony between the two players and their ability to weave melodies around each other was clearly revealed. The dynamic nature of Martin’s guitar style and the way that Thompson’s bass dances around it is just wonderful. " Nigel Finn - Technical Director
